A what-quat?

This week, we’ve added Helene’s organic, biodynamic kumquats into our mixed in-season boxes. What exactly are kumquats? They are small citrus fruits with sweet skin and tart flesh and juice. It is the only citrus fruit that you can eat whole – including the skin. Kumquats are great for eating whole as a snack, or for unique additions to salads or desserts.

Kumquats are small – only a little larger than the average grape. But size doesn’t matter with these little citrus fruits: they are packed full of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients. We recently found a great website called SELFNutritionData, which shows all kinds of interesting health information about many common foods. We looked up kumquats, and found that they are surprisingly nutritious for such small fruits. For example, one kumquat (about 19 grams) contains 14% of your daily recommended vitamin C. That means eating 7 kumquats provides 100% of your vitamin C for the day. Those same 7 kumquats also provide 35% of your daily recommended dietary fiber, and 7% each of your daily vitamin A, calcium, iron, potassium, and other nutrients. Plus, those kumquats contain about 108 grams of water, which will help make you feel full and keep you hydrated. You get all of these beneficial nutrients for about 95 calories.

Take a look at SELFNutrtionData to compare your normal snack foods to the fruit we’re currently shipping.
