How to keep your New Year’s Resolution 2012

6 of the top 10 New Years Resolutions are centered around more healthful living. They include losing weight, eating healthy foods, getting fit and quitting smoking, among other lifestyle changes.

But the problem is, “get fit” is not a goal – a definable, measurable, reachable mark that you can reach and say, “I completed my New Year’s Resolution.” That’s the main reason why one-third of Americans won’t stick to their New Year goals past January. Simply put, it’s discouraging to try and reach a goal that is so vague.

To be successful in 2012, don’t choose one sweeping resolution. Instead, create several smaller goals that build up to a general concept. For example, instead of deciding to “get fit,” decide to replace your processed snack with fresh fruit or vegetables six days per week. Add in 30 minutes of exercise on a certain number of days each week, and plan your workout into your schedule so you don’t skip or forget it. Resolve to make one home-cooked dinner during the week, and when you’ve found some healthy and tasty recipes, increase it to two home-cooked meals each week, and so on.

Smaller goals that can be tracked will increase your sense of accomplishment, which will help motivate you to continue working toward your next goal.
